Corn Maze = Lost

Rachel here.

So we left. Of course, the pop-up decided to be difficult when hooking it up to our car. Also, we sat in traffic for an hour. Then, Christian screamed non-stop making my mom miss a turn and that confused our GPS. Once we got to the camp site, our cousins had been there for a while and it was pitch black. Setting up the camper in the dark is quite difficult. In the end, though, we got it up and ended that long day.

The next morning, we got to have pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. I love whip cream. that breakfast was sooooooooooooooo good.

We drove about an hour to Valley Forge.  Valley Forge is where Washingtonand his troops wintered. They were not prepared in the least.  Here are some facts I learned:
About one out of every ten soldiers died, mainly from disease.
They arrived in Valley Forge Dec. 19
The winter itself wasn't actually that severe, it was just that Washington and his troops were just very poorly prepared.

Valley Forge was really neat, but it was super hot outside. Whenever, my mom complained my aunt teased her. "Aren't you from Texas?," she would ask. Needless to say once we got to the campground everyone was eager to jump in the pool.

That night was a long one. It rained and two of the boys, who were sleeping in a tent that was not zipped up, got soaked and had to come sleep with us.

The next morning we went to an Amish farm. I learned all about the Amish. They cannot own a car, but they can ride in one. Did you know they can't go to school once they are 15? Also, girls never cut their hair.

Once we had finished the tour we found a corn maze. Taylor, Sarah Ann, some cousins and I decided to go in the corn maze while my mom stayed out with Christian. Once we were finished, we headed back to the visitor's center to rejoin my mom and Christian. Just as we were almost there, my mom came running yelling, "Christian! Christian! Have you guys seen Christian?" You know those moments, when you seem to freeze up. I had one of those moments when I realized we didn't know where Christian was. We ran through the gift shop calling his name. They announced a lost child over the intercom. Just as we were about to panic, over the intercom came a voice, "The lost child has been found. Would his parents please come to the main desk?" We all ran over there, very much relieved.

After that, we went to Hershey Chocolate World. They have a cute free ride that we all loved that included singing cows. We also saw a 3D movie and were going to make our own candy bars, but that exhibit had malfunctioned. So instead, we went to e dessert-marking place and we all got too much and by the end of it felt sick. They even had edible paint at the tables that we could paint on the tablecloth - or eat!

All in all, we've had a great first few days except for when Christian got lost while we were all in the corn maze. (Aren't the people in the corn maze the ones who are supposed to get lost?)

  3. I was at IKEA yesterday with a friend and her 3 children, and the 2-year-old decided he was hungry and ran off to the cafe they have in the store. We were scared when we couldn't find him! Then, about 5 minutes later, we saw a 3-year-old we knew from church but didn't see his parents. His dad finally found us (and his son) and was almost crying! These little ones run off so fast and don't realize that it's not a good idea!!!

  4. That is scary you lost Christian. Glad he was okay! Did you know Grant was lost in Yosemite? He ran out behind Greg who had taken Audrey out when we were watching the movie. Then Grant couldn't find his Dad because he was walking too fast. A ranger brought him back in the movie theater to me. Greg never realized he was following him. Also, I've been to Hershey before, and to the amusement park there too. It is a fun place!

  5. Dear Rachel,
Valley Forge is an interesting place, and you are learning interesting things. When I visited Valley Forge, I felt such admiration for General Washington. He had to watch suffering that he couldn't prevent.
When the Willis Family camped in Europe, unfortunately your Grandmother Huber wasn't with us, but our most unusual experience was sleeping in a cow pasture. Hope that doesn't happen to you.

  6. Rachel,

You are learning so much on your trip. I think it would be terrific if every child in the US could go on trips like this and learning so many things - up close and personal. BUT, I think very few parents would be willing to spend the time and effort to plan such trips. You are lucky!

    Love, grandma
